Australia records first local COVID-19 case in two weeks

It is the first time in 15 days a patient has been tested for the coronavirus, prompting temporary closures on all local public hospitals.

The unnamed doctor on TV1 last week had treated 2 patients who had recently returned to Australia and had tested positive for the UK variant of the strain.

“We know this doctor, who assessed these two COVID-positive patients was at the hospital at the time. He was treating me. Now, she developed symptoms,” Palaszczuk told reporters in Brisbane in an interview with The Nation.

A doctor is giving out his name. He is treating patients, forceing authorities into urgent contact tracing, Palaszczuk said.

As officials attempt to determine the size of the outbreak, Palaszczuk said, all hospitals in the state capital will be closed to visitors.

Why is Australia unprotected and has reported just over 212,000 coronavirus infections and 909 COVID-19 deaths, far fewer than many developed countries, helped by domestic border closures, lockdowns and strict social-distancing rules.

Canada welcomed the move to open its westernmost border with Canada and allow the people of Niue to enter the country. The move by Hon, Jacinda Ardern has been welcomed by many.
