Kamala Harris is running for President in 2020 and Democrats are very excited! The first-term California Democratic senator made the Martin Luther King Day announcement on ABC’s Good Morning America and I’m sure the viewers loved it.
“I love my country, and this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to fight for the best of who we are,” Harris told George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts.
Kamala Harris is running for President in 2020, so what do we need to know?
Kamala grew up in Oakland, California and is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian parents. Her intense questioning of Donald Trump’s nominees quickly gave her rise in popularity among Democrats.
One of these moments can be seen during the hearing of the then-Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. Kamala aggressively questioned Kavanaugh sexual assault allegations which he denied.
Kamala said she spoke for few women that approached her in Iowa with her aggressive questions. Two women told her about their own struggles with sexual assault during her visit to the state.
“Think of how well Kamala Harris has performed during Senate hearings. She’s been sharp, prepared and unrelenting. Now imagine her debating undisciplined charlatan Donald Trump,” Adam Best said on Twitter.
A rising star
The 54-year-old has been a rising star all of her life. As a San Francisco District Attorney, Kamala’s extensive background in law enforcement gave highlight to her career.
“My entire career has been focused on keeping people safe. It is probably one of the things that motivate me more than anything else,” Harris said.
Fighting for middle-class tax cuts, immigration, criminal justice reform and Medicare for all. These are just some of the things her presidential campaign will be focused on during the election season.
Harris was born just 10 months before President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. The thought of an African-American or woman running for the presidency during this period was unimaginable.
Harris is the first South Asian-American and second black woman to ever serve in the Senate.
Here is a photo of a young Kamala Harris with her mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris.
Kamala has a sister named Maya Lakshmi Harris. She is a layer, public policy advocate and commentator on telivision.
In 2016, Maya was appointed to be one of Hillary Clinton’s policy advisors to lead the development of her agenda during the 2016 presidential election.
Kamala Harris’ net worth is between $581,010 and almost $2 million. Her biggest portion of her wealth came from her retirement plan from through the city of San Francisco.
Road to Iowa
“I am running for president of the United States,” Kamala said. “And I’m very excited about it.”
Kamala heads to Iowa next Monday to face questions from voters at a town hall hosted by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Drake University.
Harris also campaigned with President Barack Obama in 2008 when she was hardly known. She noted that her job was basically the pizza-delivery person.
Kamala Harris endorsements?
Harris lost a huge endorsement from fired Fox News host Bill O’Reilly after he tweeted that he can’t vote for Kamala because of how she denied Brett Kavanaugh due process in front of the nation.
But do you care about who O’Reilly votes for? Democrats are excited for her and that’s all that matters.
Kamala Harris’ is married to a Douglas Emhoff, a New York native that graduated from the University of Southern California law school. He’s currently a litigator and partner at DLA Piper Law Firm with a specialty in intellectual property and entertainment law. He also has two children, Cole and Ella.
The candidate from California is abandoning the formality of launching an exploratory committee and going all in on a presidential bid.
So will you be putting that Kamala Harris 2020 bumper sticker on your car? Maybe Dr. Lisa Galarneau is right, it’s time to let women lead and Kamala is the right leader.
