What would be the perfect match-up to take down Donald Trump in the next election? The question itself seems to lead to more questions, rather than answers. The primaries are roughly one year out at this point. Only the diehard political junkies, pundits, and politicians are paying attention to the candidates right now. Unfortunately, most of our country doesn’t even appear to be properly informed about what’s going on with the current administration, and the investigations and indictments that center around it.
In the last few days, there has been a buzz coming from the camp of former Vice President Joe Biden. He has consulted with family and loved ones and appears to have the support of those in his circle for another presidential run. I assume that he did not want to have any announcement drowned out by the continuous coverage of the House committee testimony of Michael Cohen on Wednesday, or President Trump’s ill-fated trip to Vietnam this week. With that in mind, I expect Mr. Biden’s announcement is now just hours, or at best, a few days away.
What I would like to do at this time is support my reasoning as to why I believe the strongest and best match-up for 2020 would be a ticket with Senator Kamala Harris in the driver’s seat, and the former Vice President, and elder statesman, Joseph R. Biden Jr. as her running mate.
Now I understand that what I am asking of Joe would be a giant, selfless act, and possibly one of the most difficult decisions of his life. It would require that a man who is more than well suited for, has prepared for, and has spent a significant portion of his life hungering for the presidency to put aside ambition, ego, and possibility, all in the name of party loyalty.
I don’t ask this without trepidation. I love Joe Biden. I voted for Joe Biden in the primary of 1988. I loved having him serve as our 47th Vice President for eight years alongside President Barack Obama. Barack, a man who for many, myself included, is our choice as the most distinguished and respectable President of our lifetime. So, if I love Joe so much, why am I asking him to take the running mate position?
A variety of reasons really. First off, have you taken a hard look at, and listened to the words and policies of Kamala Harris? Have you seen her trajectory? There is nowhere else for her to go. From prosecutor to District Attorney, Attorney General of California (the state with the largest economy in the nation) and now Senator. Where else can this fearless and courageous woman go? Secondly, it’s time. It’s time for youthful ambition, it’s time for women, and it’s always time for diversity. Kamala doesn’t allow herself to be defined by her diversity, but she stills brings it to the table.
The reasons just continue from there, but let’s focus again for a moment on Joe. Joseph Biden is a man with a rare wealth of understanding of U.S. government and world affairs, how the wheels of democracy turn and whose love of his country and its people cannot be questioned. Attorney and Senator from Delaware prior to his Vice Presidency, he has been vetted throughout his entire career. Joe arrives with no surprises. He has been on the committees and he has put in his dues. Let’s us not forget this statesman is the same kid who grew up in hardscrabble Scranton, Pennsylvania and a couple of years back said regarding Donald Trump “I wish we were in high school, and I could take him behind the gym”. To teach him a quick lesson no doubt.
Joe is a man who brings the necessary credentials, and Kamala is herself more than qualified. Kamala doesn’t need Joe for credibility, but it would be great to have him there. Joe, as I mentioned prior is immensely qualified in his own right.
I’m guessing by now some of you reading this may agree, and perhaps a larger number of you will at least be beginning the transition of considering my proposal. I will be sending a copy of this opinion to the camps of both Kamala Harris and Joseph Biden. The tides are changing, the people are restless, we want to be heard, we want our votes to count.
