President Donald Trump delivered his first prime-time address from the Oval Office as President on Tuesday night.
In the 10 minute speech, Donald Trump addressed the Government shutdown and his demand for border wall funding. The full transcript is available online.
Just like Chris Wallace fact-checked Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Fox News Sunday, Shepard Smith immediately fact-checked President Trump tonight, almost immediately after his address.
Trump made a few falsehoods that can be easily debunked by facts from Trump’s own administration, and video of the president himself.
Democrats are at fault
The president blamed the shutdown on Democrats but there is a video of Trump in the Oval Office with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi accepting responsibility for the shutdown.
Illegals routinely commit acts of violece against citizens
“Over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country, and thousands of more lives will be lost if we don’t act right now,” Trump said.
Trump uses tragic crimes of illegals to label all undocumented immigrants, but studies have shown that immigrants are less likely by a wide margin to commit crimes than natural-born Americans.
Mexico will pay for the wall
The president also claimed the new NAFTA deal will make Mexico indirectly pay for the wall, this is not only misleading, but totally false.
“The wall will also be paid for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico,” Trump said.
