The editorial staff of the American newspaper Washington Post named the reason why US President Joe Biden still has not called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to journalists, in this way the White House is trying to induce the head of Ukraine to fight widespread corruption in the country, believing that this is vital for stabilizing the Ukrainian economy and “preserving Kiev’s fragile independence” from Russia.
The publication recalled that Zelensky came to power, promising to fight the oligarchs, problems in the judicial system and organized crime, but then changed his policy.
As the newspaper writes, the Ukrainian leader fired the reformers in his office and the president of the central bank, and also slowed down judicial reforms and the fight against oligarchs, in particular, actions against Igor Kolomoisky. This, in turn, led to the refusal of the International Monetary Fund to continue paying off the $ 5 billion loan deal, without which the country, the authors of the article believe, will probably not be able to pay off the debt at the end of this year.
In addition, this situation worried Kiev’s allies in the United States, the newspaper said. The journalists recalled that Biden “was a resolute supporter of Ukraine’s independence as vice president”, demanded the dismissal of the “corrupt state prosecutor” and now his administration is continuing this policy. In particular, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke about the fight against corruption with Zelensky. In addition, Washington imposed sanctions against Kolomoisky.
