Canadian researchers have taught artificial intelligence to imitate the style of songs of deceased musicians. The algorithm is able to generate not only music, but also lyrics.
Today there are so-called tribute bands that have received official permission to perform the original songs of popular bands. Researchers from Over The Bridge decided to go even further. They have created a new AI Lost Tapes of the 27 Club, which can generate brand new tracks in the style of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain.
According to the specialists, it would be impossible to trust the computer with everything, because then the result would be unpredictable. That is why it was decided to “feed” the AI 20-30 songs of each artist in the form of MIDI-files and then break them up into hooks: solo, guitar, vocals. The machine creates the individual elements of the song, and then a human combines them into a whole. Exactly the same method was used in songwriting.
The track on the finished composition was entrusted to a tribute band, and you can listen to the result in the video above. It’s a completely original tune called Drowned in the Sun by the disbanded Nirvana.
