Telegram is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), Vedomosti reports. It is expected to happen in the next few years. Experts have already calculated how much Pavel Durov’s company might be valued at.
One of the newspaper’s sources said that Telegram is already pre-IPO diagnostics and is selecting the regions and the exchange where the initial offering is expected to take place. At the same time, another insider noted that Pavel Durov has not yet made a final decision on how to properly enter the market. According to him, in addition to the IPO, the company is considering options for a direct listing and the use of a SPAC company to go public. The offering is expected in 2023, but the exact date will depend on the state of the market.
According to analysts, Telegram could be valued at $30 billion to $50 billion during the initial public offering. It is alleged that inside the company, they are considering an option of tying the valuation of the shares to the monthly number of active users of the messenger, valuing one active user at $50. Not so long ago, the developers of Telegram noted 500 million monthly active users, and in the next two years, that number could grow to 0.8-1 billion.
As an example, experts cite the purchase of WhatsApp in 2014 by Facebook for $19 billion. At that time, the monthly audience of the messenger was 450 million users – about $42 per user.
